How to Regenerate Yourself After a Layoff
So many of my friends, family and clients are currently
unemployed. As a result, many of them are pretty bummed out and depleted. It's
hard to see the ones I love lose their smile, self-esteem and spirit. With this
in mind, I am dedicating this article with tips on how to regenerate yourself
after a layoff, or any major setback for that matter.
Often times, a lay-off is a lot like a divorce. After a
significant relationship with your employer ends, the idea of jumping back into
another job can be overwhelming and kinda scary. This is especially true if you
have been out of work for an extended period of time. Time begins to play
tricks with your mind and self-esteem. Fortunately, there are many ways to make
a success out of your newfound unemployment, aka time-out, and ease yourself
into an even better career, maybe even your true calling, purpose and destiny!
Here are 5 things you need to know.
1. Take time to regenerate. Make sure that you are mentally and
emotionally prepared to work again. This is one of the most important parts of
seeking employment after a layoff. The end of a job or long-term career can be
quite traumatic, especially if you were very close with co-workers as a tight
knit family that did things socially. Just as in divorce, or any other form of
loss, you are going to have to go through the process of grief. You can get
through this difficult time by talking to a life coach, relying on friends and
family for support, and taking each day as it comes. Don't be in a rush. When
you are ready to jump back into the saddle, you will know it!
2. Rebuild your confidence.
A layoff can do a number on your self-esteem. You might blame yourself
for being down-sized, think that you are a failure, unlucky, unwanted, or
obsessively wonder what you did wrong. Stop! Remember, you are not your job.
You are a kick-ass human being, no matter what, as-is. Love yourself and shine
- nothing is more attractive than this!
Your confidence and emotions may reel for a while, and only
time will help fully heal and regenerate the happiness and worthiness that has
been crushed. Use time wisely, start the healing process as soon as possible,
by choosing not to dwell in blaming and berating yourself. Why prolong and
build interest on the suffering of something that has past? You did nothing
wrong, so stop punishing yourself. Let go off the old self. Forgive and forget
the past - it's over and done so move on. Start fresh. Re-invent yourself.
Exercise. Working out boosts your energy levels and makes you feel and look
good. Feeling good about yourself, motivates new thoughts and actions! Meditate
and visualize the new and improved you. Try a new haircut, get a facial, update
your wardrobe to better suit the new you. As you rebirth yourself, be loving,
good and kind to yourself. Be the sweetest most encouraging parent of the new
you. Focus on all the things that are so awesome about you.
3. Get into the groove.
As I state over and over, there is nothing more important than getting
into the right groove, vibe and mentality. You cannot possibly land a new and
wonderful new gig while you are transmitting the wrong signals. This means you
have to be over your ex employer and the lay-off. You cannot be having thoughts
and feelings like, corporations and the man suck! This job sucks! Life is bad.
I'll never land the right job. People suck! I suck! I'll never make enough
money. Good things never happen to me! You might try to cover up all of this negativity
with a nice, fake toothy smile, a sexy suit and a well-crafted resume - but
trust me, you'll fool nobody but yourself because your vibe will give you away
and make you repulsive to all interviewers no matter how qualified you are.
People respond more so to the energy we are transmitting, than our words - this
is the truth of all truths so N.B! (Note Bene. Latin for take note!)

4. Invest in the new improved you. Take time to reassess
where your life and career is headed. Do you want to continue with the same
line of work, or something slightly or completely different? Remember, life is
not linear. What are you true passions and interests? What do you truly love to
do? If money was not the issue and you could not fail, what is your true
calling? Invest in a life coach to help you in this endeavor. Invest in
education and training that lead you towards your new goals. Set yourself up
for success! Take time to get to know yourself, as who you are now. Believe in
yourself. Sometimes when we are laid off or fired, it is the perfect
opportunity to realign with our true purpose. In every crisis there is an
blessing.
5. Expand your field of possibilities and network. Once
you've regained a sense of self through healing, centering and exercising, get
out there! You are not going to make new connections or find new inspiration if
you never leave the comfort and safety of your own living room. Resist the temptation
to isolate yourself, that's how you get stale, anxious, fearful and insecure.
Make an effort to meet new people, and commit to doing something new and
different each week. Open your mind to new ideas and avenues that utilize your
interests and skills. Expand your field of possibilities. Think outside of the
box and get creative. Invite new experiences. Try out new gigs and companies by
temping. Ask your friends or family members if they know of any opportunities,
it's all about who you know, so work it! The more interviews you go on, the
more chances you will be ready when the right situation presents itself. Just
have fun!
